COBRA coverage explained

What is COBRA?

COBRA, or the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, is a U.S. law that allows certain employees and their dependents to continue their group health insurance coverage for a limited time after experiencing qualifying events like job loss or reduced work hours. It gives you the opportunity to maintain the same health insurance plan that your employer offered for up to 36 months, though your employer no longer assists with paying the premium.

COBRA is not a government program, but it is a government-regulated method of ensuring that individuals that are recently between jobs can maintain their employer’s healthcare plan for a limited time.

Deadline

Individuals that want to take advantage of COBRA must inform their employer and fill out some forms within a limited enrollment window after leaving the job.
